Cody Orona

A former deck officer, Cody Orona joined Schechter, Shaffer & Harris, LLP in 2026 as a licensed attorney after clerking for the firm’s maritime section throughout law school. After becoming licensed to practice in Texas and Florida, he has dedicated his time and effort to helping fellow mariners injured while out at sea.

“After experiencing the challenges that come with a career at sea myself, I truly enjoy guiding injured mariners through one of the most stressful and difficult times in their lives. Having spent long hitches away from family and friends, I’m proud to represent mariners because I understand how dangerous the marine environment can be, and most mariners make this sacrifice to provide a better life for their families. My background working on foreign vessels, American-flagged vessels, Aframax Tankers, ATB’s, and OSV’s sharpens the legal guidance we offer our clients at Schechter, Shaffer & Harris, LLP.”

Cody is a graduate of South Texas College of Law, where he was a member of the nationally ranked advocacy program and was named a national finalist for the American Bar Association’s Arbitration Competition in 2025. During his time at South Texas, he was named to the Dean’s Honor List, earned CALI awards for legal research and writing, and eventually graduated with Cum Laude honors. Before law school, He earned his USCG Third Mate’s Unlimited Tonnage license from Texas A&M at Galveston.
