Recent norovirus outbreaks on two cruise ships left hundreds of passengers and crewmembers sick.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that more than 600 passengers and crewmembers were affected on the Explorer of the Seas, a Royal Caribbean cruise ship. The outbreak was the largest reported in the past two decades.
The CDC has not identified a source of the outbreak. The ship returned to port two days earlier as a result of the extensive outbreak.
On the Caribbean Princess, a Prince Cruise vessel, almost 200 passengers and crewmembers were also struck with the virus. That trip was also cut short, but the cruise line reported the cause as a dense fog forecast, not the virus outbreak.
